Q68 In the AI era, is a strategy of not competing possible?

Chapter 8 Strategy and Innovation

The Short Answer

The strongest strategy is to step outside the competition and become the one who is chosen.

Unpacking the Question

In the AI era, is a strategy of not competing possible?
If you sell the same products,
in the same market,
competing on the same metrics,
you end up in a price war.
Cheaper.
Faster.
More efficient.
And of course, AI makes that competition even fiercer.
Anyone can now run the same kind of analysis and make the same kind of improvements.
In that world, the competition never ends.
But there is a way to change the competition itself.
It is to become a company that cannot be compared.
Define new value,
create a new market,
and become a company customers choose for a different reason.
Do that, and you are far less often compared on price alone.
Not "which one is cheaper," but "we want to work with this company, because it is this company" —
that is how you come to be chosen.
Future Value Theory calls this Enterprise Redefinition.
Not winning the existing competition, but redefining the very reason the company exists.
As a result, the rules of the competition themselves change.
The truly strong company is not the one that defeated its rivals.
It is the one whose rivals ceased to exist.
Chosen without fighting.
That state is the most sustainable competitive advantage of all.
In the AI era, contests of pure efficiency only narrow the gaps.
That is exactly why defining future value
and becoming a presence compared with no one is the greatest strategy.

Implications for Management

In the AI era, efficiency competition alone makes differentiation difficult.
With the same AI, many companies can achieve similar improvements.
The result is a drift toward price wars.
This is where Enterprise Redefinition becomes essential.
Redefine not "what does this company sell" but "why does this company exist."
Rather than winning the competition, change its premises.
This is the thinking that leads to Enterprise Redefinition.

How Would You Answer?

Who is your company being compared with?
And are you creating value that cannot be compared?
