Q67 In the AI era, where does innovation come from?

Chapter 8 Strategy and Innovation

The Short Answer

Innovation is born not from new technology, but from new questions.

Unpacking the Question

In the AI era, where does innovation come from?
Many people believe that AI and new technologies produce innovation.
Of course, technology is a powerful force.
But technology alone does not make innovation happen.
Even with the same technology, the value created varies enormously from company to company.
What creates the difference is the initial question.
"Why isn't this done differently?"
"Who is truly struggling here?"
"Is what we take for granted really unchangeable?"
Questions like these uncover possibilities no one had been looking at.
When the question is new, the answer is new too.
AI can propose many answers to a question.
But which question to ask is something only humans can decide.
That is why, the deeper we move into the AI era, the more the power to generate questions matters.
Future Value Theory holds that innovation is the redefinition of the future.
Not merely improving what already exists a little,
but presenting a new view: "this is what the future should look like."
Technology is then used to make that future real.
In other words, technology is not the goal.
It is the means for realizing a future.
The company that creates the most value in the AI era is not the one with the latest AI.
It is the company that asks the question no one else has thought of, and redefines the future.

Implications for Management

The starting point of innovation in the AI era is not technology but questions.
Merely adopting the latest technology confers no competitive advantage.
What matters are "Whose problem, and which problem, are we solving?" and "What future do we want to bring into being?" — those questions.
AI can generate answers in vast quantities.
Precisely for that reason, a company's value is determined by its capacity to generate questions.

How Would You Answer?

Is your company chasing new technologies?
Or is it generating new questions?
