Q6 The Day Your Staff Becomes AI, What Happens to the Boss's Job?

Chapter 1 AI and the Future of Work

The Short Answer

From a boss who manages, to a leader who points to the future.

Unpacking the Question

The day your staff becomes AI, what happens to the boss's job?
Until now, a boss's role was to assign work, give instructions, and manage progress.
But much of that work will be taken on by AI.
AI works twenty-four hours a day.
It executes assigned work, analyzes the results, and keeps improving on its own.
When the "staff" being managed becomes AI, the job of the boss who manages changes profoundly.
In my book "The Story of Enterprise Redefinition," the rebuilt factory has no job titles.
There is only a team sharing a single future.
It is not about who is above and who is below.
Everyone moves toward the same future, each carrying the role where they can create the most value.
The leader the AI era demands is not someone who micromanages people.
It is someone who shows "where we are headed" and envisions a future where people and AI can join forces.
From a boss who manages, to a leader who points to the future.
That is the redefinition of leadership the AI era will bring.

Implications for Management

In the AI era, the value of management-style leadership will decline.
Because AI can support information flow and progress tracking.
What future leaders need is the power to show the future, move people, and give meaning.
Managers must transform the organization from one that manages into one that takes on challenges toward a shared future.

How Would You Answer?

If most of your staff became AI—
what would you manage?
Or rather, what future would you show them?
