Q55 In the AI Era, What Should the Top Leader Do First?
Chapter 6 The Work of Leaders
The Short Answer
Before adopting AI, re-examine why your company exists.
Unpacking the Question
In the AI era, what should the top leader do first?
Adopt the latest AI tools?
Rework the staffing plan?
Automate operations?
Of course, those things matter.
But I believe there is something to do before any of them.
It is to re-ask what the company exists for.
AI is an extraordinarily capable tool.
It creates documents,
runs analyses,
streamlines operations,
and even proposes new ideas.
But no tool can show its power without a purpose.
"What are we using AI for?"
As long as that answer stays vague, AI ends up as a mere efficiency tool.
On the other hand, if the company's reason for being is clear,
the work to entrust to AI and the work for humans to carry come naturally into view.
Future Value Theory holds that before changing your tools, change your definition of the company.
Do you see the company as an entity that generates profit?
Or do you see it as an entity that creates future value?
When that definition changes,
management's judgments and the way you use AI change dramatically.
What must change first in the AI era is not the systems.
It is the executive's own question.
Implications for Management
Before adopting AI, what executives must do is re-examine the company's reason for being.
Adopt AI while the purpose is still vague, and it ends at streamlining existing operations.
On the other hand, if
"What does this company exist for?"
and "What future do we want to create?"
are clear, the direction for using AI follows.
Management reform in the AI era begins not with technology adoption, but with redefining the company itself.
How Would You Answer?
What does your company exist for?
Is that answer something every employee can already articulate, even before you adopt AI?
