Q27 With all this data, why do we still get decisions wrong?

Chapter 3 Redefining Management

The Short Answer

Because data shows the past, and the future is decided by will.

Unpacking the Question

Data does not lie.
Sales.
Profit.
Customer counts.
Market share.
All of it is information no business can do without.
And yet companies still get decisions wrong.
Why?
Because all data is a record of the past.
If the future were merely an extension of the past, data alone might suffice.
But management is the work of changing the future.
Entering a new market.
Creating a product that has never existed.
Investing in a technology no one yet believes in.
For decisions like these, past data holds no answer.
The companies that changed history mostly chose the challenges that the data called "difficult."
Of course, data must not be dismissed.
Management by gut feel alone is dangerous too.
That is why it is vital to separate the roles of data and will.
Use data to understand reality accurately.
Then let humans decide what future to pursue beyond that reality.
As the AI era deepens, anyone will be able to do data analysis.
So what finally separates companies is not analytical power.
It is the courage and the will to step beyond the data.
Verify with data.
Decide with will.
Never forgetting that order is what AI-era management demands.

Implications for Management

Data matters, but data alone does not complete a management decision.
Data exists to understand the present and the past.
Management, by contrast, is the activity of changing the future.
Leaders must use data fully while still making decisions that venture into an unknown future.
Management capability in the AI era means both the power to read the data and the power to choose a future beyond it.

How Would You Answer?

The decision that matters most to you right now —
can it be settled by data alone?
Or does it require the will to believe in a future?
