Q58 In the AI era, how will evaluation systems change?
Chapter 7 Organizations and People
The Short Answer
People will be evaluated not on past results, but on their contribution to the future.
Unpacking the Question
In the AI era, how will evaluation systems change?
Until now, in most companies,
the volume of work,
the hours worked,
the number of cases handled—
immediate results sat at the center of evaluation.
But as AI takes over the tasks,
those criteria alone can no longer measure a person's value.
When the same work can be finished by AI in seconds,
"how much you got done" is no longer a competitive edge.
So what should we evaluate?
I believe there are three things.
First, what questions did you raise?
Second, what challenges did you take on?
And third, what future did you contribute to?
The person who posed a question that opens up the future.
The person who took on challenges without fear of failure.
The person who raised the future value of the company and of society.
These are the people who truly deserve recognition in the AI era.
In Future Value Theory, we hold that people, too, should be evaluated by their contribution to the future.
Of course, results matter.
But results represent the past.
Challenges and contributions to the future, on the other hand, lead to value that is yet to be born.
Evaluation in the AI era shifts from a system that measures the past to a system that nurtures the future.
Implications for Management
In the AI era, systems that evaluate only past results cannot fully measure the value of people.
Companies need evaluation systems that ask: Did you generate new questions? Did you take on challenges? Did you contribute to future value?
Systems that look only at short-term results push employees toward optimizing for the past.
Evaluation systems that create the future are what sustain growth in the AI era.
How Would You Answer?
What does your company evaluate in its people?
Past results?
Or the challenges they take on to create the future?
