Q50 What Earns a Leader Trust in the AI Era?

Chapter 6 The Work of Leaders

The Short Answer

What earns trust is not answers, but how you live.

Unpacking the Question

What earns a leader trust in the AI era?
Knowledge?
Track record?
Or is it holding the right answers?
Of course, those things matter.
But in an era when anyone can obtain advanced knowledge and analysis through AI,
those alone will not make people follow a leader.
If it's the right answer, AI can produce it too.
So what do people look at when they decide, "I'll follow this person"?
It is consistency between words and actions.
Not running away when things turn inconvenient.
Accepting responsibility when things fail.
And speaking of the future you want to reach together,
and continuing to walk toward it.
Trust is not born from titles.
Nor is it gained through ability alone.
It grows little by little, through the daily accumulation of one's posture.
Future Value Theory holds that trust means being someone the future can be entrusted to.
"I'd trust that person with it."
"I want to create the future with that company."
When people come to feel that way,
people gather,
capital gathers,
and new challenges begin.
AI will show us the optimal answers.
But it cannot create trust itself.
So the leader of the AI era is not the most brilliant person.
It is the person people most want to entrust the future to.

Implications for Management

In the AI era, knowledge and information volume alone do not determine a leader's value.
What matters is aligning words with actions and accepting responsibility for the future.
Trust is the capacity to be entrusted with the future.
Executives must become people others think of not just for short-term results, but as "someone I want to create the future with."
Companies with trusted leaders attract talent, capital, and customers, and their future value expands.

How Would You Answer?

Are you someone the people around you
entrust with tasks?
Or are you someone they want to entrust with the future itself?
