Q34 What kind of company do the best people choose?

Chapter 4 The Future of the Company

The Short Answer

A company that inspires expectations for its future.

Unpacking the Question

What kind of company do the best people choose?
The one with the highest pay?
The one with the best benefits?
Those things matter, of course.
But they are not the whole story.
Truly talented people choose a company that inspires expectations for its future.
Here, I can grow.
With these colleagues, I want to take on challenges.
This company just might change the world.
Expectations like these are what move people.
Pay is a condition for working.
But the reason people choose a company is expectation for its future.
And this is not limited to talent.
Investors, too.
Customers, too.
Partner companies, too.
They all gather around companies whose futures inspire expectation.
The deeper we move into the AI era, the smaller the gaps in knowledge and skills become.
So what companies compete on changes as well.
The question is no longer "What can this company do?"
but "What future will this company realize?"
Future Value Theory holds that corporate value is born from people's expectations for the future.
The greater those expectations,
the more talent, capital, and customers gather,
and the larger future value grows.
In other words, expectation is not a result.
Expectation itself is the highest-order management resource.

Implications for Management

Winning top talent takes more than competitive terms.
From now on, companies must show what future they are creating.
Talent chooses not only a place to exercise their abilities, but a place where their participation feels meaningful.
The stronger a company's Purpose and expectations for the future, the more it attracts talent—that most critical management resource.

How Would You Answer?

Do people join your company
for the pay?
Or for the expectation that "here, we can create the future"?
