Q25 Why do the best strategies go unexecuted?

Chapter 3 Redefining Management

The Short Answer

Because the Purpose has not been shared.

Unpacking the Question

Why is it that the finest strategies go unexecuted?
Not because the strategy is wrong.
Because to employees, it is someone else's problem.
A strategy praised in the executive meeting.
A meticulously analyzed market.
Beautifully organized slides.
And still, the front line does not move.
Few leaders have never had this experience.
People do not act because something is "correct."
They act when they feel it is meaningful.
Why take on this challenge?
Why should this company be the one to do it?
What future are we trying to create through it?
Only when that Purpose is shared does the strategy become personal.
Without Purpose, the strategy ends its life inside the slide deck.
In the AI era, devising strategy itself will no longer be hard.
AI will analyze the market, compare competitors, and even propose the execution plan.
That is exactly why the difference between companies will lie not in strategy but in the power to execute it.
And the source of that execution power is Purpose.
Strategy shows "what to do."
Purpose shows "why we do it."
People are not moved by the former alone.
They move when they resonate with the latter.
That is why, in AI-era management,
aligning on your reason for existing must come before strategy.

Implications for Management

The biggest obstacle to strategy execution is not the strategy itself, but employees not understanding what it means.
In the AI era, differences in strategy-making capability will shrink.
What becomes critical is a shared Purpose: "Why do we pursue this future?"
Leaders must do more than communicate the strategy; they must permeate the whole organization with the intent for the future behind it.

How Would You Answer?

In your company,
do employees move because the strategy tells them to?
Or do they move on their own, because they share the Purpose?
