Q24 Can AI create a Purpose?

Chapter 3 Redefining Management

The Short Answer

No. Because AI cannot live one.

Unpacking the Question

Can AI create a Purpose?
The answer is no.
Of course, it can produce plausible-sounding statements in an instant.
"Contribute to society."
"Make people happy."
"Realize a sustainable future."
All beautiful words.
But a true Purpose is not determined by the beauty of its words.
Why does this company exist?
What does it want to protect?
What future does it want to create?
Facing those questions, choosing, and committing to the choice.
That is Purpose.
Purpose is not copywriting.
When a leader makes a hard decision.
When they choose what to prioritize in a painful moment.
When they choose conviction over profit.
It is the accumulation of those actions that makes a Purpose real.
AI can write the words.
But it cannot carry that Purpose and live it.
That is why only humans can bring a Purpose into being.
Precisely because this is the AI era, a company's Purpose matters more than ever.
The more technology converges,
the more what finally draws people is not "what the company makes" but "what the company exists for."
Purpose is not something you write.
It is something you live.

Implications for Management

Purpose is not a document to be drafted; it is demonstrated through management decisions.
In the AI era, as differences in technology and features shrink, "what does this company exist for" becomes the criterion by which companies are chosen.
Leaders must not merely proclaim a Purpose but embody it in daily decisions — investment choices, business selection, hiring.
Purpose is the foundation of a corporate culture that generates future value.

How Would You Answer?

Is your company's Purpose
the words written on your website?
Or is it something that lives on in your decisions every day?
