Q13　Should you leave "management decisions" to AI?

The Short Answer

Analysis can be left to AI. Choosing the future belongs to the leader.

Unpacking the Question

Should we entrust management decisions to AI?
AI can analyze far more information than any human.
It excels at forecasting markets, calculating profits, and comparing risks.
So why not let it make management decisions as well?
That argument is heard more and more.
But I see it differently.
In my novel The Story of Enterprise Redefinition, there is a scene like this.
The AI tells the leader:
"If you accept this deal, the company's probability of survival is 98 percent."
By any measure, it is the rational choice.
And yet the leader turns the proposal down.
Because that deal led to a future different from the one the company truly sought.
AI can point to the optimal solution.
But to the question "which future should we choose?" there is no single right answer.
Prioritize profit?
Protect the founding ideals?
Choose the short term?
Choose the long term?
That choice requires values—and resolve.
So management is not the work of finding the optimal solution.
It is the work of taking responsibility for the future you have chosen.
AI can become the finest chief of staff a leader ever had.
But the responsibility for the final choice of future must be borne by a human being.

Implications for Management

AI becomes a powerful partner that raises the quality of management decisions.
But the leader's role is not only to select the optimal solution.
It is to decide which future to aim for, and to take responsibility for that choice.
Management is not an activity of finding correct answers; it is an activity of choosing a future based on values.
The further the AI era advances, the more the leader's will and responsibility matter.

Even if AI proposes a plan with "a 98 percent probability of success"—
what if that future is not the future you are aiming for?
Would you accept the proposal?
Or would you choose the future yourself?
